Thank you for letting us know you’d like to see more children’s literature resources. Each year we order new books to enhance our collection and we do our best to make sure they’re relevant to your work. This is how it works: Children’s Literature faculty request titles based on their classes and research; the subject librarian, Rebecca Seipp, also purchases titles based on our course offerings and important works in the field. In addition, our shared a collection with Roanoke College expands our offerings significantly. That said, we can’t possibly purchase everything you may need so we encourage you to use InterLibrary Loan to get titles that are not in our collection. You can also get a public library card with a Hollins ID and then have access to all of the libraries in the Roanoke Valley!
As for more diverse resources, we are working to improve our collection in that regard by identifying important resources like the Cooperative Children’s Book Center’s resources about multicultural literature, keeping up with issues of diversity in field, and seeking out diverse works when we purchase titles. This is an on-going process and we welcome suggestions for titles to purchase. You can leave a comment in the suggestion box on the first floor of the library or email Rebecca Seipp (seipprl@hollins.edu) directly with suggestions.
