We’d love a bigger library, too! But given our current space constraints, we do what we can to ensure we have room for the 2,500 or so new volumes we receive each year.
We regularly shift material in the stacks to create more shelf space for growing our collection. In the past two years all four levels of the library have been shifted. We have also added approximately 150,000 titles in e-book format, thus reducing the need for additional shelf space for those titles.
Hollins and Roanoke College share a catalog, thereby avoiding duplication of materials; both collections are available to each campus community.
For leisure reading, we rent bestsellers, and these are regularly rotated out to make space for the newest popular titles, while we keep only those titles we deem appropriate for our permanent collection.
We carefully and critically manage our collection to keep it relevant to our curriculum, which means we create space by withdrawing items that are no longer used or needed.
